Santiago de Cuba

Eine gemuetliche Ueberfahrt (3 Tage/300sm, fast alles unter Spinnaker) hatten wir  von unserem letzten Ankerplatz in den Caicos, den  Fish Cays, durch die Windward Passage hindurch  (das ist der Kanal zwischen Haiti und Kuba) an Guantanamo vorbei nach Santiago de Cuba. Schon 100sm vor Guantanamo hat uns ein Hubschrauber der US Marine ueberflogen, die haben dann sicher auch den Bootsnamen gegoogelt um zu sehen wer wir sind und was wir tun, leider werden sie wahrscheinlich keinen Kommentar am Blog hinterlassen. Vor etwa 520 Jahren ist Kolumbus bei seiner ersten Reise auch von den Bahamas kommend hier durchgefahren und hat so Kuba entdeckt.

Die ersten Eindruecke waren intensiv......ein Land vor unserer Zeit. Wer westliche  Produkte kaufen will zahlt wirklich viel Geld, wer kubanisch lebt , der ist mit Preisen konfrontiert, die unglaublich sind. Schaut auf die Fotos mit dem Eis – das sind sechs Teller Eis mit Kuchen und das ganze kostet  23,40 Pesos (M.N.=Moneda National) und das ist umgerechnet etwas weniger als EIN Euro! Zusaetzlich gibt es eine zweite Waehrung, den CUC =  Peso Convertible fuer Touristen und mit dem zahlt man in Touristenlokalen, Leihautos etwa  kosten 70 Euro pro Tag. Zahlt man  in einem Toiuristenlokal fuer einen Cafe Espresso ca. 1,00 Euro so kostet der selbe Kaffee in einem Lokal fuer Kubaner nur ca,. 0,04 Euro – fuer uns kein Problem, da wir sowieso immer lieber in Lokale fuer Einheimische gehen.

We had a great trip from our last anchorage in the Caicos, the Fish Cays (approx 300 nm, ttl. 3 days), sailing the Windward Passage to Santiago de Cuba. About 520 years ago Columbus used the the same way from the Bahamas on his first trip 1492. About 100 nm before we got to Guantanomo Bay the USCG visited us by helicopter, i am sure they checked at the web who we are and where we go to.

Our first impressions about Cuba – fantastic.....if you want to get imported products you pay a hell of money, if you buy made in Cuba you pay peanuts. Look at the  pics – we payed  less than one USD for six cups of icecream including cakes! There is another currency in Cuba just for tourists, the CUC (Peso convertible) and if you have to pay in CUC its about „normal“ price. Its  quite strange if you pay for a coffee in a local bar 0,04 USD and on the other side you pay 65 USD to rent a car for a day.
