Montserrat: Little River Band, Police, Dire Straits, Rolling Stones, Pink
In November 1493 Christopher Columbus sailed to Montserrat on his second voyage and named it after the monastery of Montserrat, which is near Barcelona. It took some years till Irish colonists became the first settlers in 1632. I think no one took real notice of Montserrat till two natural disasters affected all life in Montserrat, the first one was hurricane HUGO in 1989 and the second the eruption of the vulcano Soufriere in 1997. Now 17 years later over 50 percent of the island are still exclusion zone.
The AIR studios of George Martin (the producer of the Beatles) opened in 1979 and many famous songs are made in Montserrat, the POLICE recorded "Every little thing she does is magic" here (see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aENX1Sf3fgQ ) and the Dire Straits recored the "Brother in arms"album in Montserrat. Just 10 years later the studios had to closed due to the damages of HUGO.
Sir George Martin spend a lot of money for the new cultural building in Montserrat and it was a great pleasure for us to see the final of "Montserrat Idol 2014" there. Sharline was the winner of the evening, what an amazing voice for a 16 year old girl.
