Raiatea and Tahaa are surrounded by just one reef, so we sailed within the lagoon all around Tahaa. Anchorages are pretty perfect for catamarans, its always 7ft of sand and good holding. Many charter yachts are sailing (well in fact most of them just use the engines no matter what wind they have) here in this area, Raiatea is the main base for charters in french Polynesia. Its quite easy to see whats a charter yacht and whats an owners yacht - all the charter boats leave their anchorage late afternoon cause they need water. They dont collect rain water and have no watermaker so they cant stay overnight in a lonesome bay. We saw a manual on a charter yacht and it stated: have the engine on for at least 4 hrs per day.... well they also need a lot of power, we have our windgen and 8 solar panels so we avoid the noise and pollution in the fantastic anchorages here in the pacific.
